Working In The Community

Working in the Community

Colchester Borough Homes is committed to supporting sustainable environments and improving the quality of life for our tenants. We have undertaken a large number of initiatives, some of which are detailed below:

  • Colchester Borough Homes has recently sponsored the new football strip for Willow Brook School on the St Anne’s estate. The team, which is made up of boys and girls, has had a highly successful start to the season and recently won a local tournament involving 6 schools. Simon Waltham, Assistant Head, said “Partnerships between schools and the local community are very important to us. We are proud of our children and their success and grateful to Colchester Borough Homes for their support.  Gill Thomson, Community Initiatives Officer from Colchester Borough Homes said “ Congratulations to the football team for winning this competition, may they continue to enjoy playing in their new kit. CBH are delighted to be associated with the continued success of the pupils and staff at Willow Brook School”. If you would like to talk to Gill about a community project in your area ring 01206 507897.

  • Within CBH Sheltered Housing schemes, all obsolete units/furniture are removed by the British Heart Foundation, they sort and select furniture that is saleable (e.g. soft furnishings must have fire-resistant labels). White goods are sent to Remploy for repair, reconditioning and testing before they are sold.
  • Estate tours allow the voices of tenants to be heard on environmental issues.
  • We fund two Street Wardens to improve the local environment.
  • The Greenstead Youth Club mural was a very successful community project

  • We worked in partnership to improve an area of land adjacent to Stanley Wooster Way, Greenstead. This area was a hot spot for ASB; dumped rubbish is a constant problem. In September 2005 we started working with a group of students from the local secondary school who consulted with residents, of whom the majority of local people wanted a Community Garden. External funding from Essex County Council, The Princes Trust, Cory Environmental Trust, Fowler Smith Jones Charitable Trust and Colchester Borough Council raised over £20,000 for this project. Work started in October 2006 to clear the site. The finished design for the garden includes ideas from the students, and will include a central sculpture. We hope this garden will be an inspiration to others on Greenstead to create their own community garden.
