Committed To The Environment

Poll

Do you think CBH uses enough energy saving products when we do work on your property?

Colchester Borough Homes is committed to the environment. There are environmental ‘champions’ on both the Senior Management Team and the CBH Board. We have a  Environmental Policy Statement (click icon to download), which underlines our commitment to continually strive to work to having a positive impact on the environment.

We undertake a wide range of initiatives some of which you can find details below:

  • Walnut Tree and Charles Smith House sheltered housing schemes have solar panels heating water that uses Ultra Violet systems to control Legionella bacteria, thus avoiding the wasteful need to heat water to over 60°C to kill Legionella before reducing the temperature to 43°C to avoid scalding.
  • At present most of the cavity walls within the housing stock are filled, and lofts have insulation.
  • PVC windows now fitted are double glazed with low e-glass and the quality of these are improving with time.
  • Condenser combi-boilers have been introduced which considerably enhance the energy efficiency of systems by supplying hot water when needed rather than allowing heat loss as is the case with non condenser fitted systems.
  • Energy efficient light bulbs and lighting are being supplied free by Scottish Power and given to customers during gas servicing.
  • For decent homes kitchen units are supplied via a company who are full members of the ‘Furniture Industry Sustainability Programme’ approved by the FSC. They are in the process of introducing a cradle to the grave recycling system for their own product.
  • Property Services have a contract with a company for the disposal of refrigerators; a similar arrangement exists for the disposal of fluorescent tubes.
  • Contractors are assessed for their environmental credential using an extension of the industry standard (CHAS – Construction Health and Safety) taking the form of an environmental assessment questionnaire.
