Extra Care
New forms of sheltered housing and retirement housing have been pioneered in recent years, to cater for older people who are becoming more frail and less able to do everything for themselves. Colchester Borough Homes has two Extra Care schemes, which are The Cannons and Heathfields House.
Extra Care Housing is housing designed with the needs of frailer older people in mind and with varying levels of care and support available on site. People who live in Extra Care Housing have their own self contained homes, their own front doors and a legal right to occupy the property. Extra Care Housing is also known as very sheltered housing, assisted living, Category 2.5, or simply as 'housing with care'.
In addition to the communal facilities found in most of our sheltered schemes (residents' longe, guest suite, laundry), our Extra Care schemes includes a dining room where if you choose you can have a meal once a day for a small charge. Personal care is available to those that need it, using both on-site staff and staff who visit the schemes.
