Mayor Celebrates 20th Birthday of Grymes Dyke Court

10.06.2009

The Mayor of Colchester, Henry Spyvee, has celebrated the twentieth birthday of Grymes Dyke Court along with the residents, and scheme manager Sharon Lunnon. Everyone there was invited to a special celebration on 10 June. The Mayor was given flowers by two residents who have been at the scheme in Stanway since it opened.

Grymes Dyke Court was opened on 20th May 1989 by Councillor Dr. Sanderson. The name of the Sheltered Housing scheme comes from the Roman earth works which run along the back. It has 42 flats and 50 tenants.

About five years ago, an extension was built, as there was not enough room in the lounge for everyone. There is a hairdressing room which was paid for by the tenants, and a snooker room. The scheme hosts loads of activities, and there has been a holiday club for the last twenty years. Last year a new garden was built with a special water feature.

Colchester Borough Homes Director of Housing, Karen Loweman, said “It’s great that the Mayor is marking this anniversary with the residents. Sheltered Housing offers a great way for older people to retain their independence, and live in a friendly and secure environment.”
