Incentives To Move Home
How The Scheme Works
You have to be a council or housing association tenant in Colchester to be eligible. The rules are different for each group of people. The aim of the scheme is to encourage people to move from family sized homes to smaller ones. This frees up larger homes for those who need them.
If You Are A Council Tenant
In order to be eligible for the scheme, you need to be living in a 2,3 or 4 bedroom home.
If you are over 60, or over 55 and receiving the Disability Living Allowance, you can apply for the Incentive if you move to sheltered housing.
You may be interested in the scheme if:
- Your current home has more bedrooms than people living in it.
- You want to cut your heating costs.
- You need help or support to do maintain the garden.
You would get £750 per room if you downsize by two or more bedrooms. (You would be eligible for £1500 for a move to 1 bed home from a 3 bed home).
You would be eligible for £500 if you downsize by one bedroom. (For example, you would get £500 for moving to a 2 bed home from a 3 bed home).
Your application for a new home also gets a high priority, under the scheme.
If You Are A Housing Association Tenant
With the scheme, your application for a smaller property is given a high priority, but you would not get the cash payment that a council tenant would.
